With both sadness and gratitude for his service, that Bella House announces the death of former President of the Board of Directors, John O’Dwyer. Upon retirement from his position as President of Celanese Corporation, John decided to devote his time, talent, and treasure to improve the lives of others, particularly homeless, pregnant mothers and those with multiple myeloma. From 2018 until early 2024, when health issues arose, John served as President of Bella House Board of Directors.
John and Dorothy O’Dwyer were instrumental in securing the purchase of the Bella House homes in Plano and Dallas, bringing along a circle of supportive friends with them. Whether it was finding professional staff and Director, building an engaged, diverse Board of Directors, or directly addressing the physical needs of the Bella House mothers and babies, John’s infatigable efforts have made a lasting impact. Using his strong business acumen, John was particularly focused on operating efficiency and value, always making sure that donated funds and resources were allocated not only to saving the lives of moms and babies, but also helping them thrive. John actively lived out his mission, never wavering from a challenge. Bella House is profoundly grateful for his and the O’Dwyer family’s dedication to life.

"My heart was greatly saddened when hearing of John's passing. We go through our daily routines yet knowing someone we know is nearing their end. I didn’t personally know John, but working for the Bella House I saw a man who truly believed in the Mission. A man who along with his wife Dorothy would get his hands dirty when there was a need. Whether it be yard work, something breaking, helping with garage sales, community events or whatever the need he would be there.
I saw a man who the Lord blessed financially who gave it away in so many ways to make a difference in someone’s life. He did it because he saw something in the cause or the person that needed a helping hand.
John was truly a God send to Bella House. I am so thankful to have known and seen his generous heart at work. I pray the Lord be merciful for his eternal soul and may perpetual light shine upon him. I pray for the love of God to surround his wife and family with much Peace and Joy. Amen"

"John O'Dwyer was Bella House. No job was too big, no task too trivial. Crafting a business plan, writing a grant, mulching a flower bed, hosting a volunteer get-together-- they were all the same to him, all part of his vision that mothers and their babies could not only survive, but thrive, in an atmosphere of encouragement, discipline, and love. It was an honor to know John and to be a small part of the legacy he helped create."

"Dear John, I know you are reading this, so please know you made a difference in the lives of so many. While we mostly know you in the context of a corporate world, you made sure that we act and operate as though all of humanity is connected. You are an inspiring human being - whether ensuring our customers have the most optimal solution, our employees are engaged and motivated, or lending hand to help our neighbors in our communities. We know that this world is a better place because you were in it. We also know that sweet Dorothy was a difference maker in your life and thus in the lives of so many. So, be assured that I am very sad that you may no longer be directly helping this world be a better place or to go play golf, but looking past my sadness, I am filled with the assured hope that you will also make next world a better place, we shall carry on your legacy of helping improve this world, and I will play golf with you again. Rest in peace."
